Bikram Yoga Teacher Training

“The more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war.” -Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit

Bikram Yoga teacher trainings are done with an emphasis on Bikram Choudhury’s style of yoga, primarily a series of 26 postures done in a heated room, usually at least 105 degrees or more. Bikram or ‘hot’ yoga has seen an uprising in recent years as yoga gurus like Choudhury emphasis warmth in a yoga practice as a means to loosen muscles, increase flexibility and raise the heart rate for a more cardio vascular workout. For those seeking anything from greater flexibility to weight lose, Bikram yoga can be a great way to increased fitness levels even for the sports enthusiast who gets his heart pumping outside of a yoga class.

Since Bikram was born in Calcutta with respectable yoga teachers of his own, he has grown a rather large following. He opened the Bikram’s Yoga College of India and has helped literally millions through his own teachings and by teaching others to become healthier both mentally, physically and spiritually. He practically guarantees his method, and since he helped to heal himself with the help of one of his gurus when he injured his knee in a weight lifting accident that left him unable to even walk, it seems he can support his claim with life experience. He has said, “If you follow my instruction and do my yoga postures Sequence to the best of your ability, you will live a better, healthier and more peaceful life.” Bikram Yoga Teacher trainings are meant to pass on this philosophy.

One way to find great Bikram Yoga teacher trainings is to attend a Bikram yoga studio in your city. Often, since these sites are primarily Bikram enthusiasts as well as licensed through Choudhury’s schools, can tell you exactly what you would need to do to become certified yourself. These studios are sometimes licensed to give their own certification courses and are registered with the Yoga Alliance or other governing bodies of yoga. Some studios will be very specific in recommending Bikram trainings as compared to ‘hot’ yoga trainings, as they see Choudhury as their guru. Choudhury has also filed a copy write suite against studios that call themselves ‘Bikram’ yoga studios without his assent.

Without causing an insurgence, if you merely want hot yoga training, then I would try other studios without the Bikram name. If you want the Bikram name and its style , which is often balls-to-the wall power yoga with no exceptions, then stick with a Bikram registered studio. If you aren’t sure what you are getting, the name will tell you at least in the US – since studios are no longer allowed to even use the Bikram name without being affiliated to Bikram Choudhury himself. Bikram Yoga teacher trainings are available all over the world.

The Bikram School of Yoga has an entire page of current Bikram Yoga teacher trainings listed at http://www.bikramyoga.com/TeacherTraining/BecomeCertifiedTeacher.php. You can visit this site and find out about teacher trainings as well as yoga competitions, studios throughout the world, special workshops and of course like-minded Bikram yoga enthusiasts who share your excitement for this type of yoga.
