Yoga Teacher Certification: Course or Travel?

When choosing a teacher training certification, the big question may be: local course or travel? It all depends on a few key factors:

  • Money. It would be lovely if we all lived in a world that would grant us plenty of vacation days and a round trip ticket to a balmy climate to practice yoga for several weeks or even a few months for a yoga teacher training certification, but the fact is that airfare is pricey these days and vacation time, at least in the US, is hard to come by (if you live in Europe, consider yourself lucky since you have an average of 3 months more vacation per year than Americans do.) If you have plenty of money and can afford the cost of a around the world plane ticket, then opt for travel – it will enrich you in ways that are unthinkable and you can enjoy a change of scenery at the same time as learning how to practice a perfect downward facing dog.

  • Time. It would also be lovely if we could blow off all out responsibilities to friends, family, clients and bosses, but many of us can only afford to be away from home a few weeks at a time. See if you can offer to pick up extra shifts to store up addition PTO days or vacation time, and maybe add on to vacation time you have already, near holidays, to add on a few vacation days, and you can get more time for your teacher training practice without having to take work off without pay.

  • Convenience. Although travel is delicious, plain and simple, don’t overlook high quality yoga teacher trainings in your own backyard. Some really great teachers tour the world. You can find some of them in the most ‘unglamorous’ places if you keep an eye out. Yogafinder.com is a great resource for finding a mini-vacation like teacher training or weekend workshop in your city or one nearby for the times when you just can’t seem to get away. If you can’t sign up for a month-long intensive, try one night with a great teacher. It will be worth every penny.
