Can You Practice Hot Yoga at Home?
If you can’t always fit a class into your schedule you may wonder if you can practice hot yoga at home. Although practicing in a class environment is easier for many people, since they have an instructor there and other people to help them stay motivated and to have a visual reference for the correct alignment in yoga postures, you can still imitate the environment of a hot yoga class in the privacy of your own home.
You can start your hot yoga practice at home by making sure you have a clear space to lay down a yoga mat and at least one foot of clearance beyond that on all sides. This is to ensure that you can move with freedom when you are practicing. You will also want to make sure that you have bottled water within reaching distance and possibly a few clean hand towels to wipe off your sweat so that you don’t slide on your mat when practicing.
If you already live in a hot climate, you can practice outdoors and just enjoy the fresh air and sun on your body, helping to warm your muscles, and make them more supple. If you live in a cold climate, you can imitate the heat of India by using space heaters and humidity. If you happen to have access to a dry sauna, you can practice inside it, or warm your body by sitting in the sauna first and then practicing in a warm room. Your own body heat created by the movements will help to sustain the heat you have built up in the sauna.
If you don’t have access to a sauna, then you can set up several heaters and a humidifier in a room to mimic both the heat and humidity levels of many hot yoga classes. You want the heat to be moist heat, not dry, because this helps to keep your lungs and upper respiratory system healthy while you practice. Dry heat will make you feel dry in the throat and make it difficult to breathe. Space heaters or central heat that we use in winter often dry us out and cause colds and sinus issues because the air lacks moisture. If you can, place a bowl of water on top of your radiator so it will evaporate into the air if you don’t have access to a humidifier either. You will feel the benefits during your practice and just while going about the business of your day if you have to use artificial heat to warm your home or office.
Practicing hot yoga can be a great way to slim down the body, burn fat, become more muscular, and to create a lean, flexible physique that is less prone to injury. Hot yoga will also help to build your immune system and with consistent practice make you feel like a million bucks. Just be sure to stay hydrated whether you are practicing in a class or at home. Your body and mind will thank you for the effort and discipline of undertaking a regular hot yoga regime.
