Yoga Teacher Training – How much Does it Cost?

If you have decided to attend a yoga teacher training, you may be wondering – how much does it cost? Although there are some across the board expectations, there is quite a range depending on the program and location.

Many yoga teacher training programs are prohibitively expensive, especially for a working person who may also have family needs to attend to. Others are rock-bottom cheap, but may leave you with a less than desirable education on yoga. In the many variations of yogic instruction, there are programs which concentrate on the nuts and bolt of yoga, and others which aim at being more comprehensive. Although you can find programs (like Yoga Fit) that will charge as little as a few hundred dollars for a weekend’s worth of training, they cover only a few asana or yoga poses, and don’t even touch on pranayama, yogic philosophy like yama, nimaya, or karma and definitely don’t present important yogic texts like the Bhagavad Gita, Hatha Yoga Pradipika or Upanishads, which are important texts that have informed yogic practice for centuries.

It costs as much or as little as you are prepared to offer. Although more conclusive programs that require your immersion, often in a foreign country and culture and not just the yogic lifestyle, are sometimes expensive, you will come away with a much deeper understanding of yoga, beyond just a physical practice, but a mental and spiritual practice that your eventual students will learn to deeply appreciate. If you want to be worth the cost of a living wage in your own country, then you need to plan on spending at least $4000-6500 on your instruction. This will ensure you have a well-educated teacher that has practiced for many thousands of hours and has had a lineage of gurus who taught her or him the more subtle aspect of yoga that can never be taught in a weekend seminar.

If cost is an issue for you, but your heart is really in it, then you can find ways to afford your teacher training. Many ashrams around the world will offer discounted training fees or lowered living expenses if you volunteer while staying with them. Others offer payment plans or split fees upon request. If you are really soul-drawn to a particular place of study, then email or call and ask what they can do to help you get there. Although you needn’t break the bank yoga teacher trainings, you should invest in a teacher training you would be proud to go home with and share with others. Ultimately, yoga is an investment in you, that is well worth any monetary value you could ever place on it.
