Yoga Teacher Training – Study Abroad?

It doesn’t matter if you aim on visiting Delhi, India, or the Bahamas, Bali or New York City, you can find a yoga teacher training that inspires you.

Sometimes just being in a new environment helps you to change your mind. Henry David Thoreau told us that “Good for the body is the work of the body, good for the soul the work of the soul, and good for either the work of the other.” We can find newness in a yoga posture, but sometimes coming into the perfect Vriksasana or Shirsasana in a new place can do even more to turn our perspectives on our head – and do the body and soul some real good.

You can find yoga teacher trainings abroad that are as simple as an ashram stay in lonely, rural village in India, without western toilets or electricity, to luxurious retreat-like stays at hotels and spas during your yoga teacher training in tropical paradises or foreign lands full of vibrant culture and beautiful scenery. You can enjoy your ‘vacation’ while learning the ins and outs of a new yoga posture, a new yogic breath like Brahmari or Shitali, or learn to quiet your mind in the peaceful forests or flowing waterfalls of places like Hawaii, Guatemala or Jamaica.

If you are considering whether to take your yoga teacher training abroad or keep it closer to home, cost isn’t always the primary issue. Some programs in foreign countries are even less expensive than teacher trainings in the US, Europe or Australia since the cost of living and rate of exchange are so favorable to foreign students. You can find all-inclusive yoga teacher training retreats, for example in exotic locations that are comparable to trainings closer to home, and often even less expensive, even after you pay for airfare and accommodations away from home. When choosing to study abroad, you may need to consider time more than money, since you will need to allow time to travel, and you will be away from a job, family and friends for a more extended time.

You can find a yoga teacher training abroad for almost every type of yoga, so do a little research and keep an open mind. You might be able to fly to Bali for the same price as doing a month long intensive in your own backyard. Make a list of the cost of the training, the book fees, the hotel accommodations, airfare prices at different times that trainings are offered and the money you will lose if you are having to take time off without pay. If you have vacation or sick leave accumulated, you may come out on top by getting your yogic education and visiting an exotic new place.
